Higham Lane Sixth Form opened in September 2016. We have had two sets of results that were examined prior to CAGs in 2020 and the TAGs in 2021 and now the most recent results from 2022. We are an academic Sixth Form and offer 20 subjects at A-level and two as vocational courses (Health and Social care and Criminology).

We have not offered the AS level at Sixth Form. Our entry profile required students to obtain at least 5 or more 9-4 grades with 6s in the subjects that they wished to study at A-level. For Business, Economics, Government and Politics, Health and Social Care, Law, Criminology, Media studies. Psychology and Sociology we used students other subject GCSE attainment if they were not offered these at GCSE. Chemistry and Physics need a 6 in Mathematics, and this was a recommendation for Computer Science. We offered resits in GCSE English Language and Mathematics for students who achieved a grade3 in either subject.

The subjects introduced at A-level that are not offered at GCSE at Higham Lane School are Economics, Government and Politics, Law, Criminology, Media Studies and Psychology. This also applies to the vast majority of students who join us from different schools.

EPQ is offered but it is not available to all students as timetabled subject clashes, unfortunately, prohibit this choice. Nevertheless, there are a few that this applies to that have still chosen the EPQ and are mentored outside of timetabled lessons.

Students were offered four subjects if they attained high grades at GCSE or if it supported their Post 18 degree choices. Most students are encouraged to select three. The students will have received assessment reviews in the Autumn and Spring of Year 12 and sat a Mock last Spring. Regular testing and assessments throughout the course has given us further reassurance about our Level 3 predictions. Regular moderation and quality assurance have also contributed to our confidence in making predicted grades.

Sixth Form absence due to positive covid cases – Autumn term 2021, Spring 2022 and Summer 2022

We have had students absent due to catching covid or who have had close contact isolations. For a few this has happened more than once. During Year 12, we have also delivered mental health support to help transitioning from GCSE’s and managing time off sixth form. Where there has been absence, teachers have, at times, delivered virtual lessons on Google Meets or Zoom.

We use the DfE Level 3 Value Added Ready Reckoner through the use of SISRA to help us track progress. We create an end of Year 12 and end of Year 13 aspirational Expected Standard Grade for each student complemented with a flightpath so that progress is robustly monitored. Student Progress Reports are issued and Student Progress Evenings with parents/carers are calendared regularly.

This year we are using the following to make our UCAS predicted grades

  • Expected Standard Grades
  • Yr 12 Autumn and Yr 12 Spring assessments
  • Year 12 (Spring) and Year 13 Trial exams
  • Yr 12 class assessments and marking
  • Lock down Google Classroom assessments and marking
  • Other summative data

Higham Lane School has been selected to be part of the National Collaborative Outreach Programme (NCOP), delivered by ThinkHigher in Coventry and Warwickshire. Areas were selected where the HE participation of young people is both low and much lower than expected based on GCSE-level attainment. Therefore the project aims to work closely with students to raise aspiration and to increase progression to further and higher education. Some of our students have been identified as a result of their postcodes. We have had many students apply to Oxbridge over the years and we have received our first success this year. She was a 2021 leaver who applied for 2022 entry.

We offer many opportunities with links with HE and businesses and this includes the creation of a Student Union. The Union organise charity events, celebrate diversity and offer a range of subject and wider societies.
