The Challenges Of Social Media
As social media technology evolves at a rapid rate, new issues are becoming a serious and worrying problem.
To tackle the issue, Higham Lane School has held a series of assemblies where the dangers of sexting and inappropriate use of social media have been highlighted via a hard-hitting slide presentation entitled `Exposed'.
In addition, a letter home to parents and carers from Headteacher, Mr Kelly, has drawn attention to the modern day challenges of social media misuse:-
``You will be aware that I have talked about this subject a number of times over the last few years. We, like other schools, are finding new issues are emerging as technology develops. Our work is part of a national campaign to make young people more aware of the dangers of sexting and is in response to a growing problem. I appreciate that some of the content may be a little sensitive in nature, however given that the vast majority of our students have mobile phones and other devices which allow them to go online, they need to be aware of the dangers. To address this we have recently held an assembly about issues such as sexting and offered practical advice about how to block somone online who is sending unpleasant messages, blocking someone who makes offensive calls or sends offensive texts, as well as giving advice about social media such as Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, including privacy settings. Please can I ask you to be vigilant and actively monitor your son/daughter's use of such sites? Also please talk to your son/daughter about their safe use of such technology. Thank you.''
